Description

The Degree in Biotechnology provides scientific, technical, and ethical training to study the possibilities of utilising organisms for the production of goods and services with commercial value, as well as laying the foundations to enable students to contribute to the development of new biotechnology tools. Graduates in Biotechnology will have the necessary ability and training to pursue a research career in the field of biosciences.

Competences

Graduates in Biotechnology will have core competences in:

  • Knowledge of the molecular, cellular, and physiological foundations of the organisation and functioning of living organisms and understand how to employ this knowledge to achieve biotechnology processes.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to apply a variety of effective techniques, tools, and methodologies in the design and manufacture of biotechnology products. 
  • Knowledge of the primary biological databases, as well as knowing how to find and interpret information and then disseminate the results.
  • Ability to develop and manage biotechnology processes.
  • Ability to pursue a research career in the field of biotechnology.


Distinguishing characteristics

This degree trains graduates in the combined field at the intersection of biology, bioinformatics and bioengineering in order to explore concepts, techniques and methodologies.

The course focuses on the student's personal and intellectual development with a high degree of cross-cultural and interdisciplinary study. 

Following on from this degree course, UVic offers Master's and doctorate programmes in Systems Biology.
