Description
The degree course trains occupational therapists to promote, maintain or restore health, improve the quality of life and rehabilitate or adapt an individual's abilities in order to attain maximum personal autonomy through models, methodologies and activities that involve work and the environment for therapeutic purposes. Occupational therapy fosters an inclusive society that allows its members to fully exercise their rights as citizens and contribute despite difficulties.

Timetable
Afternoons. Timetables may be extended to include mornings for practical sessions and depending on the optional subjects that students select. Practical sessions take place in the mornings or afternoons.

Competences
The Degree in Occupational Therapy aims to establish the knowledge essential to providing appropriate care to individuals and families living in difficult situations such as unemployment and its social, economic and health effects, as well as guidance on searching successfully for new occupations, and facilitating the integration of people who have been excluded from or lost employment into the labor market.
Distinguishing characteristics
Internships
The University has a number of partnership agreements with public and private institutions in the social, health and business fields offering internships during the degree course. Agreements also exist with European and Latin American universities and health centres for those interested in study abroad.
Other
UVic has specialised laboratories for each course equipped for case simulations and practicals in techniques, procedures and experiments (wordy? perhaps just, "...case simulations and practicals"?).

Career opportunities
Occupational therapy generally leads to careers in three main areas:
- Physical or sensory rehabilitation: facilitating access to rehabilitation services in hospitals, mutual healthcare providers, primary healthcare centres with rehabilitation services, in-home rehabilitation businesses, consultancy services for personal autonomy, community and co-operative programmes or private practice.
- Care of the elderly: facilitating access to health and social services centres, homecare programmes, support programmes for carers, day centres and nursing homes, cognitive stimulation or community programmes.
- Care for people with mental health problems and drug addiction: in-home programmes (PSI), day hospitals, hospital wards, day centres, haflway houses, nursing homes, special needs work centres, drug addiction assessment teams, community programmes and family support groups.
