Coupled human-natural systems (CHANS) or social-ecological systems offer an integrated framework for examining ecosystem sustainability and resilience. Yet application of these frameworks has been dominated by an institutional perspective and quantitative modelling, with less attention to the roles of culture, agency and lived experience of people within these systems. This talk illustrates the application of social-ecological systems frameworks to pastoral social-ecological systems and considers the roles of nature culture feedbacks and alternative methodologies for integrating social and ecological data
