Catalan is a Romance language. Like Spanish or French, it belongs to a group of languages drawn from Latin. Studying Catalan will help you to discover the region you’ll be staying in during your time in Vic.Spanish is also a Romance language. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Knowledge of this language opens the doors to a great culture and worldwide professional opportunities.English is the most common foreign language studied by those who have come through the Spanish education system. In today’s globalised world, it is essential to have a sound command of this and other languages.
Most inhabitants of Catalonia have a command of two of the region’s official languages: Catalan and Spanish. (The third official language is Occitan, called Aranese in the Vall d’Aran.)Everybody who has been educated in Catalonia is bilingual. At university, mainly Catalan is used, but you can also communicate with all members of the community in Spanish.Catalan universities wish to increase the use of languages among university students and future professionals. Therefore, they promote multilingualism and the learning of other languages.
Catalan is the main language in Catalan universities. It is also the language that is commonly used in the city of Vic and in teaching and administration at the University of Vic.Spanish is the joint official language in Catalonia and in Catalan universities. All the University of Vic’s academic and administrative information is available in this language.English is not an official language in Catalonia or in Catalan universities. However, it has become the de facto third language in these universities. To obtain a bachelor’s degree from a Catalan university, you must certify that you have attained level B2 in a language other than Catalan and Spanish.
Approximately 85% of classes at the University of Vic are taught in Catalan. The language of instruction for each subject is public information, and is announced in the student guides for each bachelor’s degree. Some of the subjects at the University of Vic, particularly those aimed at students from outside of Catalonia, are given in Spanish. At the University of Vic, all bachelor’s degrees have a minimum number of courses taught in English. These courses provide contact with exchange students, increase foreign language knowledge and help students to obtain the level B2 certificate.

All languages are a source of knowledge; studying English is important, but it is also vital to be interested in other languages. Sometimes you only need to start reading in a language to realise that you understand more than you thought. Promising ideas are not limited to one language.
See the foreign language courses offered at the Language School.
Students who are interested could take a course leading to an official exam in Catalan to certify their language level.
These exams are the same in all Catalan universities and are recognised by the Catalan government. In Vic, they are held once a year.
The UVic-UCC Language School is an official examination centre for Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language (DELE).
All international students can take the Cervantes Institute’s official Spanish exams.
