Òscar Camps Gausachs (born Barcelona, 1963), a human rights advocate, social activist and founder of the NGO Proactiva Open Arms, was granted a doctorate honoris causa by the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) in the University's Aula Magna this afternoon, in a ceremony which was attended by more than 200 people, including the Senate of Doctors and other members of the university community, and the new doctor's relatives, friends and colleagues.

According to the latest estimates, 153 million adults worldwide by 2050 - three times as many as today - will be living with dementia, which suggests that the world is facing a major health, social and economic problem. Caregivers of relatives who have Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia usually have to take on the role of primary caregiver during their disease, which means they have very diverse needs.

56% of the world's consumption of fresh water for industrial uses takes place in the food and beverage industry. In the meat sector, pig slaughterhouses can use between 250 and 550 litres for each slaughtered animal, with the cleaning of carcasses and equipment and sanitisation of the facilities accounting for the highest levels of water consumption. The amounts used in cattle slaughterhouses are even greater: between 500 and 1,000 litres per carcass.

As part of the 32nd annual conference of the EAIE (European Association for International Education) that is taking place in Barcelona until 16 September, UVic-UCC was today visited by a delegation of 58 representatives from various foreign universities, many of which are partners of the university.

Digital literature, which has been created to be read on an electronic device, is an appealing and interactive form of narrative that encompasses the language of books, films, websites and radio, among other media. Scientific research addressing the impact of digital literature on students' reading is still limited. The European project Dilectings (Digital Literature Educational Competences for Teachers: Intercultural Inclusive Good-practices for Second Language Learning) has been launched in this context.

The EHECADI (European Health Care Final Dissertation) project, led by the University of Vic - Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC), has been launched in order to help university students prepare their degree final project (DFP) starting in the first year, giving them a more pragmatic approach and an international perspective aimed at solving society's real needs in the health field (Science With and For Society).

UVic will be offering two new university master's degrees in the coming 2022-2023 academic year, which will be added to its range of second cycle studies. These are the master's degree in Food and Sustainability, within the Faculty of Health Sciences and Welfare, and the master's degree in Application of Accessible Artistic Practices, associated with the Faculty of Education, Translation, Sports and Psychology.

UVic-UCC has been ranked 131st in the world in the Times Higher Education Young University Ranking, which focuses on 790 universities that are under 50 years old. This means that it also ranks third in Catalonia, behind Pompeu Fabra University and Ramon Llull University, and is in the same position in Spain, as the top seven ranked of the 32 Spanish universities that were included in the sample are in Catalonia.

Livestock farming is a very important economic activity in the European Union (EU) and the one that makes the most use of land, either directly or indirectly. European livestock farms produce 1,400 tonnes of manure, and only a very small fraction of this amount is processed, while the rest is applied to agricultural soil as fertiliser, leading to a heavy environmental impact. The European Fertimanure project (Fertilizers from animal manure) is being undertaken to help overcome this situation.

The number of new students enrolled in the official degree programmes at the Universitat de Vic – Universitat Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC) for academic year 2021-2022 has risen 16% compared to the previous year, with an increase of the number of students enrolled of 3,739. By programmes, the increase in the number of new students in the UVic-UCC’s Bachelor’s programmes is 21%, and they cover 84% of the spots available for bachelor’s programmes via pre-enrolment, 8 points more than last academic year..
