FIRST Tech Challenge: the new STEM programme for young people aged between 16 and 20 years old arrives in Spain

The Fundación Scientia, the University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia and the company Girbau have reached an agreement to organise the FIRST Tech Challenge programme for the next three years, to promote scientific and technological vocations among young people aged between 16 and 20 years old. This year, the qualifying tournament will be held at the American School of Barcelona (Esplugues de Llobregat) on 5 and 6 April, and will host around 16 teams from Spain and other European countries. The tournament will be held at UVic for the next two years.

FIRST Tech Challenge is one of the largest international STEM programmes (dealing with science, technology, engineering and mathematics) for young people between 16 and 20 years of age. This programme joins the others that are also taking place in Spain: FIRST LEGO League Junior (6 to 9 years old) and FIRST LEGO League (from 10 to 16 years old), for which UVic has had experience in organising tournaments since 2012.

How the tournament works

FIRST Tech Challenge is engineering and fun in its purest form. The teams, made up of a maximum of 15 people and two or three mentors, design, create, test and program autonomous robots operated by drivers that have to carry out a series of missions in a space measuring 3.66 m x 3.66 m. These missions are based on an international challenge that is different every year. This time round, the challenge is "Rover Ruckus", in a nod to exploration beyond the solar system. The language of the competition is always English.
During the tournament, the teams have to present their "Engineering Notebook", containing the know-how about their robot, to the judges.

Introductory kick-off

There will be a meeting to present the challenge on October 20, which will launch the programme. This presentation is open to participants, mentors, coaches and anyone interested, and will provide the keys to understanding how the tournament works and everything you need to know in order to be able to prepare for it properly. The meeting will take place at the American School of Barcelona (c/Jaume Balmes, 7, Esplugues de Llobregat) from 11 am to 1 pm.
