UVic-UCC consolidates its position as the fourth best Catalan university in THE World University Rankings 2023

The University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) has consolidated its position in the international THE World University Ranking (WUR) by Times Higher Education, which has just published its 2023 edition. UVic-UCC, which entered this ranking for the first time last year, is ranked between positions 501 and 600 among a total of 1,799 public and private universities - a number that has increased by 137 institutions compared to the previous year. It is also the seventh ranked university in Spain, which has 55 universities listed - three more than in the previous edition. In its range, UVic-UCC is tied with the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Ramon Llull University and the University of Valencia.

This increase in the number of higher education institutions that have entered the international ranking is the reason behind UVic-UCC's rise in the ranking compared to the position it achieved last year, when it was ranked in the 401-500 range and was the sixth ranked university in Spain, a country for which three more universities are listed than in the previous year. According to the rector of UVic-UCC Josep Eladi Baños, "these figures reflect the University's consolidation in the leading positions and show that universities' results inevitably fluctuate every year."

Increase in the scientific citations indicator

The THE WUR ranking is one of the most prestigious worldwide, and is based on an analysis of 13 indicators in the areas of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation. UVic-UCC has maintained stable results for all its indicators, and its position is particularly good in the area of citations in indexed journals, in which it is ranked 123rd with a score of 91.6, while last year it had 90.

It also retained its position in the indicators for teaching (16.1 points), research (12), knowledge transfer (37.9) and international outlook (59.7). UVic-UCC's overall score calculated on the basis of all these indicators is between 39.3 and 42 points, which is in the same range as last year. According to the rector, the results for this series of indicators "highlight the continuous progress and growth of UVic-UCC in areas such as research and at the same time, the room for improvement that the institution still has in other areas, such as teaching." According to Josep Eladi Baños, "an analysis of the parameters used to construct these indicators can help in the future strategic decisions that have to be taken."

Present in other rankings

Times Higher Education produces university rankings to assess the performance of higher education institutions on the world stage. Its analysis focuses on three main aspects of universities' work: research, teaching and impact.

UVic-UCC is present in two other Times Higher Education rankings: the Impact Ranking, which evaluates the work of universities with regard to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the Young University Rankings, in which it was ranked as the third best young university in Catalonia and Spain in 2022, and was ranked 131st internationally.
