Chair in Innovation and Management of Health Services

The Chair in Innovation and Management of Health Services was created in response to the readiness of academics to generate and implement knowledge and transform talent in the health sector. In today's society, there is an intense demand for services but also uncertain expectations about the future of the welfare state. Health Services are still dealing with the consequences of a recession and the sustainability and solvency of the national health system is being questioned. Can the welfare state continue under the same conditions as in previous decades? Considering this situation, the Uvic-UCC aims to foster initiatives and contribute results in the field of teaching and research that help to innovate and improve the governance, management and funding of health services.

Mission

The Chair in Innovation and Management of Health Services contributes to creating a space for professionals, the public and institutions who wish to exchange ideas and make advances to provide a quality national health service which is public, universal and sustainable.

Vision

Applied research in the field of management must be implemented in the administration and governance of health and social organisations. The scientific method can be applied to these tasks. Asking questions and seeking innovative solutions to improve the governance, management and funding of these institutions forms part of their social responsibilities.

Fragmentation in the planning, management and funding of health services does not meet any of the public's needs. The promotion of policies of institutional partnerships and integrated management of services must be the norm, to ensure equality and quality. Sustainability is also important in this context.

Objectives

The priority research areas are:

  • Integrated healthcare projects (AISS).
  • Cost-effectiveness studies on innovation in management.
  • Organisational and economic effects of social determinants of health.

Main objectives:

  1. Promote studies on integrated models of healthcare.
  2. Promote studies of cost-effectiveness of new models of management in health services.
  3. Promote projects of innovation in models of governance, management and funding of health services.
  4. Transfer and implementation of knowledge generated in postgraduate programmes and master's degrees.

The Chair organises specific, innovative postgraduate courses that complement the University's current undergraduate programmes. The teaching programmes are consistent with the changes and transformations that our model of welfare state has experienced. Furthermore, a variation of UVic-UCC's current MBA (Master in Business Administration) is offered, associated with the Health-MBA.
