Citizens who wish to study in Spain for more than 3 months and less than 6 must process a:

Type D study visa of up to 180 days

There are visas (type D) for studies that allow stays in Spain for periods of up to 180 days. This type of visa does not allow you to process a foreigner identity card (TIE), but it does contain a foreigner identity number (NIE).

Citizens who wish to study in Spain for more than 6 months must process the following:

Embassy at origin: Open type D study visa (authorization to stay for studies)

Once in Spain: Foreigner identity card (TIE)

  • This type of visa is valid for three months and you have one month after entering the Schengen Area to apply for the foreigner identity card (TIE).
  • It is a temporary stay permit that is valid for the duration of the study stay in Spain.
  • The permit is granted for a maximum of one academic year (or two years in the case of studies carried out at an authorized higher education institution, leading to the award of a recognized higher education qualification when it includes a preparatory course or compulsory internships). It can be renewed as long as the studies are ongoing and good use of the previous course is demonstrated.
  • The visa can be requested at the Spanish consulate or embassy closest to the town of residence.
