Using art as a therapeutic tool involves artistic creation to facilitate the expression of emotions and resolution of emotional and psychological conflicts. Art is not just a tool for introspection but also a way of raising awareness and bringing about change in the community. “Art as a tool for social transformation” consists of workshops in artistic techniques that contribute to social change and the basic rights of handicapped people.

Since occupational therapists use art as a therapeutic tool, the use of art for personal and community transformation is an important skill in this field.

Art as a tool for social transformation has arisen from a collaboration between five European universities with degree courses in Occupational Therapy: UVic-UCC, Artevelde Hogeschool, in Belgium, the University of Derby, in England, Escola Universitària d'Infermeria i Teràpia Ocupacional (EUIT), in Spain, and HAN University of Applied Sciences, in The Netherlands.
